Ed Berland

Ed BerlandEd Berland is a transplanted New Yorker by way of a 13 year stop in Los Angeles. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1970, after spending a four year stint in the U.S. Air Force as a Nuclear Missile System Electronics Technician. He would eventually graduate in 1973 from Sonoma State University with a Bachelor's Degree in Art Studio with emphasis on painting, drawing and illustration.

He worked for 7 years in the computer and electronics industries as a senior electronics test technician and also as a freelance graphic designer, after earning his college degree.

In 1976, Ed was struck with the notion that work was making him into a "crazed corporate cog" and not the "rugged individualist" he wished to become. He left his employment and bought his first "big" motorcycle. Thinking that it needed to be broken in, he would ultimately spend a 3 month period riding the motorcycle 15,000 miles in a rather large circle, encompassing Mexico, Canada and the perimeter of the United States.

Two years later, he "relapsed" and left the employ of yet another company and flew to London, where he acquired a

BMW motorcycle and investigated almost every castle and church in western Europe....and 10,000 miles and four months later, he shipped the bike back to the U.S.A., where he continues to ride it.

In 1984, Ed began what would eventually be known as Berland Design Group, one of the first advertising design studios in Northern California to embrace electronic design and production. Berland Design Group provides a full range of marketing, advertising and design services to a multitude of clients.

Along the way, Ed became a charter member of the Sonoma County Ad Club. He joined the original Santa Rosa Breakfast Club in 1985, and became a member of the Santa Rosa Kiwanis Club in 1988, where he has sat on the board of directors for the last 10 years.

His favorite leisure activities include participating in Viking and other medieval reenactments, the reconstruction of medieval arms and armour, sailing (whenever he can find someone with a boat), quaffing stout, reading science fiction, cinema, listening to celtic music and Sunday motorcycle rides with his wife, Melinda Hughes-Berland.

In between those activities, he has taught computer graphic design at Sonoma State University and participated as a seminar lecturer in electronic graphic design through the Sonoma County Ad Club. All the while raising a daughter, now working as an EMT.

A Sonoma County resident, he lives in the town of Santa Rosa with his wife, that old Beemer, his newest ride and four bengal cats, who torment him mercilessly.
